Invisalign for Adults

You've thought about this more than once. Maybe your teeth were straight at 16 and have drifted since. Maybe you never had braces and you're tired of waiting for a better time. Invisalign may fit that situation: clear, removable trays.

Dr. Hulse and Dr. Kelsey

Dr. Hulse isn’t the only orthodontist here. Dr. Kelsey has been practicing orthodontics for over 25 years, and he spent 18 years as a professor teaching orthodontic residents at the University of Illinois Chicago.

What is different about getting Invisalign here

You’d like to see where this ends up before you start, and you’d like it to fit around work.

What is a ClinCheck plan, and who builds yours?

Every Invisalign case begins as a digital file. Your teeth are scanned in 3D, and that scan becomes a ClinCheck plan: a computer simulation of how each tooth moves, stage by stage, from where it is today to where it finishes. Dr. Hulse programs it personally. You’ll watch your teeth move at every stage on screen and review the plan with him before any aligners are ordered. Refinements (extra trays) are included in most treatment plans if adjustments are needed, so ask where yours stands when you review it.

How much of your week does this take?

Less than you’d guess. The first visit runs about 1 hour. If you’d like to begin treatment before you leave, allow another 40 minutes; that offer covers Invisalign as well as braces. Starting that day is an option, not a rule; if you’d rather not, the next step is a morning appointment booked shortly after your consultation. You’re seen in an individual treatment room. Hours are Mon to Thu 8 AM to 5 PM and Fri 9 AM to 3 PM; the office is closed Saturday and Sunday. Not ready to come in? Send 6 photos of your teeth by text to (760) 448-1344 for a free Virtual Smile Assessment, and Dr. Hulse replies to you.

How adult Invisalign treatment actually works

Invisalign is a series of clear, removable aligners, each custom-made from a 3D scan of your teeth and each moving them a little further than the one before. No brackets, no wires. The full mechanics are on the page about how Invisalign works.

What the first visit and your plan look like

The consultation is free, and it covers more than the exam. New patient forms are online; fill them in before you come. The visit includes:

  • An exam by Dr. Hulse, with digital x-rays and photos
  • A 3D scan of your teeth
  • A plan for treatment, if Dr. Hulse recommends it
  • An estimate of what your treatment would cost
  • A check of what your dental insurance covers

Will you actually wear them?

That is the question to settle first. Aligners need to be in 20 to 22 hours a day to be effective, and over a working day that looks like this:

WhenYour aligners
Meals and snacksOut
Coffee, tea or any drink other than waterOut. Hot drinks can stain or warp the trays
Brushing and flossingOut, and brush or rinse before they go back in
Meetings, calls, the commute, sleepIn

You move on to the next set on the schedule Dr. Hulse sets for your plan, with regular check-ups along the way.

How long treatment takes, and what happens when it ends

How long will you wear them? That depends on your bite, how much movement is needed and how consistently you wear your aligners. Dr. Hulse gives you a projected timeline at the consultation, once he has seen your scan, and the post on how long Invisalign takes goes deeper on what shapes it.

Then treatment ends, and the part that is easy to forget about begins. Dr. Hulse provides your retainers at that point. For the average patient, the removable retainer is worn full-time for the first 2 months, then only while sleeping. Unsure of your own retention program? Ask Dr. Hulse; he’ll give you specific instructions. We recommend wearing retainers for life, because teeth shift over time. If yours drifted after braces as a teenager, you’ve already watched it happen. The full wear schedule is on the page about retainers after treatment.

Is Invisalign right for you, and what does it cost

Age is usually the first worry.

Am I too old for Invisalign?

No. There’s no age at which orthodontic treatment stops being an option. The American Association of Orthodontists puts adults at one in four of all orthodontic patients. There are invisible options for every patient, including Invisalign and clear braces, and adults pay no “premium” fee. The page on why it’s never too late for orthodontic treatment has more, and all treatment options sit on one page if you’d rather compare before you book.

Who Invisalign is not right for

Not everyone. Some cases, including a complex bite correction or severe crowding, may still be better treated with braces, and braces are available here too. Which are you? The free exam, with digital photos, x-rays and a 3D scan, is what tells Dr. Hulse whether treatment is appropriate for your teeth and which option fits. If you start with the free Virtual Smile Assessment instead and it suggests a bite issue that may need a specialist’s attention, call (760) 448-1344 and we’ll refer you to one of our associates.

What Invisalign costs for an adult

Full orthodontic treatment here, braces or Invisalign, with no discounts or insurance applied, tends to range between $4,500 and $6,400. Dr. Hulse can’t propose a cost for your case until he has examined you at your new patient appointment. What can move your fee within the range:

  • The complexity of your case.
  • The length of your treatment.

If your dental insurance covers orthodontic treatment, your personal cost comes down. Policies vary, so we review yours thoroughly at the consultation.

Flexible payment plans and in-office financing options are available, and what they’d look like for your case is covered at the consultation. For the longer version, see what treatment costs.

What to look at next

If aligners turn out not to be a fit, the alternative is under the same roof.

Braces or Invisalign?

Both are available here. The side-by-side comparison lives on the main Invisalign page, and the fixed options, metal and clear ceramic (3M Clarity), have their own metal and ceramic braces page. The first visit is the same free consultation either way.

If you were looking for something else

Invisalign for a teenager rather than for you? That’s Invisalign Teen, which has its own page. Questions about Invisalign that aren’t adult-specific are collected in more Invisalign questions. And if you’re deciding where to go before you decide what to get, the page on orthodontic care in Carlsbad covers the office itself.

Common questions about Invisalign as an adult

Is it worth getting Invisalign as an adult?

That depends on what you want changed and on whether removable trays suit you. The trays are nearly invisible, and they come out for meals and brushing. The commitment is wear time: aligners have to be worn 20 to 22 hours a day to be effective, and since they're removable, keeping them in is on you. The free consultation shows you what Invisalign would do for your teeth and what that would cost.

What is the average cost of Invisalign for adults?

Full treatment here, whether braces or Invisalign, tends to fall between $4,500 and $6,400 with no discounts or insurance applied. No cost can be proposed before your new patient appointment and Dr. Hulse's exam, which is why it is a range. Insurance, when it covers orthodontics, brings your share down. The consultation is free, and it includes a cost estimate for your treatment.

Is 40 too old for Invisalign?

No. Age alone never rules out orthodontic treatment; the exam looks at your teeth, whatever year you were born. One orthodontic patient in four is an adult, according to the American Association of Orthodontists. Book a free consultation and you'll hear what Dr. Hulse sees in yours.

What disqualifies you from Invisalign?

Invisalign can treat crowding, spacing, mild bite problems and crooked teeth. For more complex bite corrections or severe crowding, braces may still be recommended. Dr. Hulse makes that call at the free consultation, once he has examined your teeth.

Do you wear a retainer forever after Invisalign?

Yes. We recommend wearing retainers for life; teeth shift over time, and a retainer is what holds them. The usual pattern for a removable retainer is full-time wear for the first 2 months and nights only after that, and Dr. Hulse gives you specific instructions with your retainers. The full schedule is on the page about retainers after treatment.

General information only: this page describes Invisalign treatment for adults and is not dental or medical advice. Reading it creates no patient relationship with Hulse Orthodontics; results vary, and only an in-person exam can say whether Invisalign suits you. The prices shown are typical ranges rather than a quote. For advice about your own teeth, ask Dr. Cameron Hulse, DDS, or another qualified provider.
