How Much Do Braces Cost?

Full braces treatment at Hulse Orthodontics tends to run $4,500 to $6,400, and early (Phase I) treatment for a younger child is a separate course that tends to run $2,000 to $4,200, both before any discount or insurance. Dr. Hulse won't put a number on your treatment until he has examined you, and that exam is free. So where in the full-treatment range will you land? It comes down to how far your teeth have to travel, how many months that takes, and which appliance your case needs. Below you'll find what moves the number, how payment plans work, the 14 insurers we're a preferred provider for, and what happens if your teeth shift years after the braces come off.

Who is quoting you this price?

Type “braces cost” into Google and most of what comes back is a national average. It can’t tell you what your treatment will cost, because nobody who produced that number has looked at your teeth. So who is quoting you?

A specialist orthodontist, not a price list

The range on this page is what we charge. Orthodontics is a recognized dental specialty, and the word means something specific: 4 years of dental school, then 2 or more years studying that specialty full time, per the American Association of Orthodontists. Dr. Hulse looks at your x-rays, your photos and the way your teeth meet, then tells you what your case needs and what it costs. Your own figure comes out of that exam, which is why you’re reading a range here instead of one tidy number.

What your price includes

What happens if your teeth move again, years after the braces come off? That is part of the cost too, and it is worth knowing before you compare numbers.

The Retreat Program: you do not pay for full treatment twice

Teeth can shift after treatment. It’s why retainers exist, and it’s why we run a retreat program for all previous patients. If for any reason your teeth shift after orthodontic treatment, you will not be charged for a full orthodontic treatment again. You are charged for monthly visits and new retainers at the completion of your retreat.

Retreatment is not free. You are charged for monthly visits and new retainers. What you don’t pay a second time is the full course of treatment, and that matters, because the real cost of orthodontics isn’t only what you pay during treatment. You can see what retainers cost broken down by type.

Same-day starts and what that saves you

Here, a consultation and a start can be one appointment. Whether your consultation is about braces or Invisalign, you can get started the same day you come in, so if you think you’ll be ready, block an extra 40 minutes for that first appointment. What that saves you is time rather than money: a second appointment. If a same-day start doesn’t suit you, you’ll get a morning appointment shortly after instead.

What moves the price of braces

A $4,500 case and a $6,400 case are both full braces, both before any discount or insurance. So what separates them? Mostly, how complex your treatment is.

What actually changes your number?

4 things do most of the work.

What drives itWhat that means in your mouthWhich way it moves your cost
How much movement your bite needsCrowded front teeth are a different job from an open bite or a misaligned jawMore correction means more months and more visits, so higher in the range
How long treatment runsThe AAO says most people have braces for 12 to 24 monthsThe length of treatment can change the cost
Which appliance the case needsMetal braces, ceramic braces, clear aligners, or an expander before braces even startThe type of treatment can change the cost
Your age and stage of growthA Phase 1 course for a child of 7 to 10 is not full bracesEarly (Phase I) treatment has its own range, $2,000 to $4,200

2 people can walk in the same week with the same crooked front tooth and leave with different numbers, because one of them has a bite that meets correctly and one doesn’t. Dr. Hulse works out which you are at your exam.

Metal, ceramic or clear aligners?

Metal braces are the workhorse and they handle nearly every case. Dr. Hulse uses metal brackets whose design means a smaller, more comfortable bracket. Ceramic braces work the same way with tooth-colored brackets, for patients for whom treatment aesthetics is a primary concern. Invisalign moves teeth with removable clear trays instead. Braces and Invisalign are quoted from the same range here.

How long does treatment take?

While treatment length varies, most people have their braces for 12 to 24 months, according to the American Association of Orthodontists. You’re back for a checkup or adjustment every 4 to 8 weeks, so a longer course means more visits.

Paying for braces

What do braces cost a month?

How much are braces a month?

There’s no single monthly figure we can give you here, because it depends on your own total and your own plan. We offer flexible payment plans and in-office financing options to spread out the cost. Ask about the plan at your consultation. That’s the appointment where a range finally turns into a figure.

Does insurance cover braces?

Many dental insurance plans include some orthodontic coverage for children under 18, although coverage is less common for adults, according to the American Association of Orthodontists. We’re a Preferred Provider for 14 carriers: Best Life and Health, Cigna Dental, Delta Dental, Dentemax, Guardian, Humana, Lincoln Financial, MetLife, Premera Blue Cross, Prudential, Sun Life Financial, United Concordia, United Healthcare and UMR. That list is subject to change. Bring your plan to your free consultation and we’ll verify the benefit for you. If your insurer isn’t on that list, bring your plan anyway: insurance policies vary, and we’ll review yours. There’s more on how orthodontic insurance usually works.

What do braces cost in California?

Search “braces price California” and what comes back is a statewide average. California runs from Crescent City to Chula Vista, and an average stretched across all of it isn’t a quote for anybody in particular. Our range in Carlsbad is $4,500 to $6,400 for full braces, before any discount or insurance, and it’s the same range whether you drive in from Encinitas, Oceanside or San Marcos. What moves you inside it is your bite, not your zip code, and Dr. Hulse sets your own figure at your exam. If you’re weighing up local practices, you’ll find hours, directions and the rest of the local picture on our page for braces in Carlsbad.

What if you do not have insurance?

Start here: the $4,500 to $6,400 on this page is already the number before any discount or insurance. It does not assume coverage, so it is where you start if you have none, and it doesn’t go up because you don’t have a plan. From there you have 2 levers:

  • A payment plan or in-office financing, to spread out the cost rather than paying all at once.
  • The free consultation itself, which costs nothing and is the only way to find out whether your case sits near the bottom of that range or near the top.

Frequently asked questions

How much do braces cost per month?

That depends on your total and your plan, so there's no single monthly figure. Flexible payment plans and in-office financing can spread out the cost. Full braces tend to run $4,500 to $6,400 before any discount or insurance, and your monthly amount comes at your free consultation.

How much are braces without insurance?

Full treatment tends to range from $4,500 to $6,400, before any discount or insurance. It already assumes no coverage, so it is where you start if you have none. Dr. Hulse sets your exact figure at your exam, because it tracks your own bite. Payment plans are available if a lump sum isn't realistic.

Does insurance cover braces?

Many dental insurance plans include some orthodontic coverage for children under 18, although coverage is less common for adults. We're a Preferred Provider for 14 carriers, including Delta Dental, MetLife, Cigna Dental, Guardian and United Healthcare, and that list is subject to change. Bring your plan to the free consultation and we'll verify the benefit.

How much do braces cost in California?

A California average isn't a quote. At our Carlsbad office full braces tend to run $4,500 to $6,400 before any discount or insurance. Your own number comes at your exam, because it tracks your bite, not where you live.

What is the cheapest way to get braces?

If your insurance covers orthodontic treatment, use that benefit. A payment plan can spread out the rest. Beyond that, your case sets the price. The consultation is free, so finding out costs nothing.

Are braces worth the money?

Braces can correct bite problems, not only how teeth look, and the AAO counts better oral hygiene among the advantages. The AAO says most people have braces for 12 to 24 months. If your teeth shift later, our retreat program means you're not charged for a full treatment twice, though monthly visits and new retainers are charged.

Can you get braces if you can't afford them?

Braces aren't free, but a lump sum isn't the only route. Flexible payment plans can spread out the cost, and many dental insurance plans include some orthodontic coverage for children under 18, although coverage is less common for adults. The consultation costs nothing, so you can find your real number first.

This page is general information, not dental advice, and reading it does not create a doctor-patient relationship. Results vary, and whether a treatment suits you can only be decided at an in-person exam. The figures above are typical ranges, not a quote. For advice about your own teeth, speak with Dr. Hulse or another qualified orthodontist.
