How early orthodontic treatment works
Here’s what Dr. Hulse checks for at age 7, and what happens if he finds a problem.
What happens at the age 7 check
Around age 7, most children have a mix of baby and adult teeth, which makes it a good time for Dr. Hulse to check for tooth and jaw problems. The AAO lists these possible outcomes of an early visit:
- There may be no need for treatment recognized at that time.
- Treatment may be necessary in the future, so the child will be followed periodically while the face and jaws continue to develop.
- A problem that would benefit from early treatment already exists.
If treatment can wait, ask Dr. Hulse when your child should come back for another check.
What is Phase 1 treatment?
Phase 1 (sometimes written Phase I), or early interceptive treatment, is for children whose check finds a problem that would benefit from early treatment, usually between ages 7 and 10. Not all children need it. It isn’t about straightening every tooth yet. It’s about setting the stage. Ask Dr. Hulse whether your child may need more treatment later.
What early treatment can involve
The AAO gives examples of early treatment, such as braces worn for a short time or a palatal expander, which can widen the upper jaw and is ideally used while a child is still growing. At the exam, Dr. Hulse will tell you whether your child needs early treatment and what it would involve. You can read more about orthodontic appliances before you come in.
Is your child ready for treatment, and what does it cost?
You’ve noticed something about your child’s bite, and you’re not sure it can wait.
Signs worth booking a check for
We recommend a free consultation if you notice any of these:
- Early or late loss of baby teeth
- A hard time chewing or biting food
- Mouth breathing
- Finger or thumb sucking
- Crowded, misplaced or blocked teeth
- Teeth that come together abnormally, or do not come together at all
You don’t need to wait until your child turns 7 if something looks off. A sign on this list doesn’t tell you what, if anything, your child needs. The exam does. The full list of signs to watch for has a few more.
What braces for kids cost in Carlsbad
| Stage | Typical age | Typical fee (before discounts or insurance) |
|---|---|---|
| First orthodontic check | By age 7 | Free consultation |
| Early (Phase 1) treatment | Usually 7 to 10 | $2,000 to $4,200 |
| Full treatment (braces or Invisalign) | When Dr. Hulse recommends it | $4,500 to $6,400 |
These ranges are a point of guidance, not a quote. There’s no way to propose a cost until Dr. Hulse has examined your child, and where a case falls depends mostly on how complex the treatment is. An open bite or a jaw irregularity, for example, is far more complex than crowded teeth. If your child has Phase 1, ask Dr. Hulse what any later treatment would cost. Insurance and payment plans
Coverage varies from plan to plan, so our team verifies your benefits at the consultation and helps maximize them. For whatever insurance doesn’t cover, we offer flexible payment plans and in-office financing options. If your insurance benefits change or end during treatment, you remain responsible for all charges.

Pediatric dentist or orthodontist: what’s the difference?
Searching for a pediatric orthodontist? You’re looking for an orthodontist who treats children. A pediatric dentist has two to three years of specialty training after dental school and limits their practice to treating children only, according to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. An orthodontist trains for a similar length of time after dental school, 24 to 36 months, but focused on the bite and jaw alignment. You don’t have to wait for a dentist to refer your child to an orthodontist.
We don’t provide general dentistry, so keep up your child’s regular checkups and cleanings with their dentist. During orthodontic treatment, that means once every six months, minimum.
Questions parents ask about braces for kids
At what age should a child go to the orthodontist?
By age 7. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first check-up with an orthodontist by then, when children have a mix of baby and permanent teeth. At our Carlsbad office, that first check is free, and not every check leads to treatment.
Is age 10 too early for braces?
Not necessarily. Early (Phase 1) treatment usually falls between ages 7 and 10, so a 10-year-old can still be in that window. Whether your child should start now or wait is decided at the exam, once Dr. Hulse has looked at their teeth and x-rays.
How much should braces cost for a child?
At our office, early (Phase 1) treatment tends to range from $2,000 to $4,200, and full treatment from $4,500 to $6,400, both before discounts or insurance. Where your child's case falls depends mostly on how complex it is, and Dr. Hulse can only propose a cost after examining your child at the free consultation.
Are child braces covered by insurance?
It depends on your plan. If your dental insurance includes orthodontic benefits, it lowers what you pay, but policies vary, so we check yours at the free consultation. Payment plans and in-office financing are there for whatever insurance doesn't cover. More on coverage for braces.
Can a pediatric dentist do orthodontics?
Sometimes, depending on the problem. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry says dentists are responsible for recognizing and diagnosing problems in a child's developing teeth, and for managing or referring them depending on how complex the problem is and on the dentist's scope of practice. An orthodontist is a dentist who has gone on to train specifically in the bite and jaw alignment, and Dr. Hulse is a specialist orthodontist.
This page is general information about orthodontic care for children. It is not dental or medical advice, and reading it does not make your child a patient of Hulse Orthodontics. Whether any treatment suits your child takes an in-person exam, and results vary. Prices on this page are typical ranges, not a quote. For advice about your child's teeth, ask Dr. Cameron Hulse, DDS, or another qualified provider.
