Why Carlsbad parents choose Dr. Hulse for teen braces

Who will you meet at the first visit? Dr. Cameron Hulse, who opened Hulse Orthodontics in Carlsbad in 2007.

Dr. Hulse was an orthodontic patient in high school

During that treatment, he realized how much his new smile changed him and decided he wanted to improve other people’s smiles.

He earned his DDS at the University of Southern California, then completed his orthodontic residency and CAGS at Jacksonville University. He is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists.

Our Google rating is 5 stars from 805 reviews (September 2026).

An orthodontist rooted in Carlsbad

Dr. Hulse lives in Carlsbad and supports local schools and youth programs, from basketball to band to scouts. Our office on El Camino Real in Carlsbad proudly serves families throughout Oceanside, Vista, Encinitas, and San Marcos.

How teen braces work, from the first visit to the retainer

Here’s the whole process in four steps, then how it fits around sport, band and school.

Four steps, start to finish

  1. Step 1Consultation: x-rays, photos, 3D scan and plan review
  2. Step 2Placement day: brackets on, and your teen picks elastic colors
  3. Step 3Adjustment visits every 4 to 8 weeks
  4. Step 4Removal, and a custom retainer

We recommend wearing retainers for life. For the average patient, a removable retainer is worn full-time for the first 2 months, then only while sleeping; ask Dr. Hulse for your teen’s instructions.

Sports, band and school days

For sport, the American Association of Orthodontists strongly recommends a mouthguard with braces; ask Dr. Hulse which kind suits your teen.

If your teen plays a wind or brass instrument, tell Dr. Hulse at the consultation.

We’re open until 5 PM Monday to Thursday and until 3 PM on Friday, and we’ll work closely with you to make appointments as convenient as possible. By maintaining low to nonexistent wait times, we make sure that your appointment runs smoothly.

If a bracket or band comes loose, call the office right away before coming in, and bring the piece.

Soreness and treatment time

Your teen will likely feel some soreness or discomfort during the first week after braces go on and after routine adjustments. A warm washcloth, or a heating pad used as its label directs, may help ease sore jaws. If your teen has severe or long-lasting pain or discomfort, call the office.

Treatment time depends on the case; ask Dr. Hulse at the consultation.

Is your teen ready, and what will it cost?

Not sure your teen needs braces yet, or what it will cost you?

Is your teenager a candidate?

There is no exact age to begin orthodontic treatment, and it is never too late. What decides it is the consultation, where digital photos and x-rays are taken to determine whether treatment is necessary. A Virtual Smile Assessment by text can tell you sooner whether braces may be right for your teen.

What teen braces cost in Carlsbad

Full treatment with braces or Invisalign tends to range from $4,500 to $6,400 before any discount or insurance. It’s a guide, not a quote: there is no way to propose a cost of braces until your new patient appointment. Where a case falls within that range depends mostly on how complex the treatment is. See what treatment costs and which insurers we work with.

Insurance, payment plans and repairs

Our team verifies your orthodontic benefits and helps maximize them, and you can spread the rest over a payment plan or in-office financing.

It’s our office policy to repair several breakages at no additional cost to you; if breakage becomes excessive, there is a fee for repairs. If teeth shift after treatment, the Retreat Program means you won’t be charged for full treatment again, only for monthly visits and new retainers at the completion of your retreat.

Questions parents ask about teen braces

At what age should a teenager get braces?

It depends on your teen's teeth and bite, not their age alone: Dr. Hulse checks both at a free exam with digital x-rays and photos. Not checked yet? Start there, or with a Virtual Smile Assessment by text. More on when to start braces.

Is age 15 too late for braces?

No. It is never too late for orthodontic treatment, and Hulse Orthodontics treats teens and adults. Whether now is the right time for your teen is what the free consultation with Dr. Hulse will tell you.

What's the average cost of braces for a 14-year-old?

At Hulse Orthodontics, full treatment with braces or Invisalign tends to range from $4,500 to $6,400 before any discount or insurance. There is no way to propose a cost of braces for your teen until the new patient appointment. More on what treatment costs.

Does insurance cover braces for 14 year olds?

It depends on the plan. If yours includes orthodontic benefits, we verify them at your consultation. Either way, flexible payment plans and in-office financing options are available. More on coverage for braces.

Is Invisalign better than braces?

Neither is better for every teen. Braces are fixed and stay on, while Invisalign Teen aligners come out and need to be worn 20 to 22 hours a day. For more complex bite corrections or severe crowding, braces may still be recommended. You and Dr. Hulse decide which fits your teen at the free consultation. More on Invisalign Teen aligners.
