Braces for Adults

Braces are not only for teenagers. If the cost, the thought of brackets in a Monday meeting, or a hunch that you missed your window at 15 has kept you from booking, a free consultation settles all three.

Who treats you

Braces at 40 raise a question braces at 12 don’t: who exactly is going to be moving your teeth?

A specialist orthodontist

Dr. Cameron Hulse opened Hulse Orthodontics in 2007. He is a specialist orthodontist, which means dental school came first (a DDS at the University of Southern California) and orthodontic training came after it (a residency and a CAGS at Jacksonville University). Before either, he took a BS in Zoology at Brigham Young University. Orthodontics is the specialty he trained for, and when you come in, he is the one who examines your teeth.

He is a member of the Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists, the California Association of Orthodontists and the American Association of Orthodontists, along with the American Dental Association and the San Diego County Dental Society, and he attends continuing education courses frequently to stay current. There is more about him on his profile page.

What is different about adult braces here

An adult patient’s needs are not a child’s, and the level of attention and care is different too.

You can start the same day

How soon can the brackets go on? The same day as your exam, if you allow another 40 minutes on top of the consultation. If that doesn’t suit you, we’ll schedule a morning appointment shortly after. New patient forms are online, so you can do the paperwork at home instead of in the waiting room.

No premium fee, and your own room

We don’t charge adult patients a “premium” fee. Your appointments take place in an individual treatment room.

Metal or clear ceramic: you choose

Both are fixed braces with brackets and a wire. One difference is what shows.

OptionWhat showsGood to know
Metal bracesMetal brackets and a wireYou choose your elastic colors on placement day
Clear ceramic braces (3M Clarity)Durable, translucent ceramic brackets, a nearly invisible alternative to metalSmooth, molded edges for less irritation, and an open design that helps you keep your teeth clean during treatment

Part of the choice is how much you want on show, and Dr. Hulse will tell you at the exam whether your case has a preference of its own.

How adult braces work, from the first visit to the retainer

Braces for an adult follow the same four steps as braces for anyone else: a consultation, placement day, adjustments, and removal with a retainer.

The free consultation

The first visit costs nothing and takes about 1 hour. It includes:

  • Digital photos and x-rays, taken to determine whether treatment is necessary at all
  • An exam with Dr. Hulse and, if treatment is recommended, a customized treatment plan
  • A cost estimate for your case
  • Insurance verification
  • Time for your questions and your input on which option fits your life

Not ready for a visit yet? A free Virtual Smile Assessment starts with a text: 6 photos of your teeth, sent to (760) 448-1344, and Dr. Hulse looks them over and replies.

Brackets on, adjustments, brackets off

On placement day the brackets are bonded to your teeth. After that you come back every 4 to 8 weeks for checkups or adjustments, and how many of those visits you need is something Dr. Hulse can only judge once he has seen your teeth. For soreness in the first week after placement or an adjustment, a warm washcloth may help; if you take a pain reliever, follow the label and check with your doctor or pharmacist first, especially if you are pregnant. For a wire that rubs, a little wax over the end may help. If the pain is severe or long-lasting, or the wire still bothers you, call the office. If a bracket comes loose, call us right away and bring the piece with you: it’s office policy to repair several breakages at no additional cost, with a fee if breakage becomes excessive.

Wearing them at work

Adult orthodontics is now common and accepted. Most adults find that confidence in their new smile far outweighs early self-consciousness, and the day-to-day routine is a short list. Brush 3 times a day and floss once. Keep your cleanings with your dentist at least every 6 months; we can help coordinate wire removal for those appointments. Skip popcorn, caramel, taffy, gum, hard pizza crust, whole apples and nuts. That’s easier over a desk lunch than it sounds.

Retainers when the braces come off

When the braces come off, Dr. Hulse provides a removable retainer to hold your teeth in their new position. Most relapse, or unwanted tooth movement, happens in the first 6 months after the braces are removed, and teeth will keep shifting over time, which is why we recommend wearing retainers for life. For the average patient that means full-time for the first 2 months and then only while sleeping. If you’re unsure of your own retention program, ask Dr. Hulse for specific instructions. The wear and care details are on our retainers page.

Are you a candidate, and what will it cost?

You may be unsure whether your teeth still qualify, or what the bill would look like. The free exam answers both.

Is there an age limit?

It is never too late for orthodontic treatment. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, one in four orthodontic patients is an adult. Whether braces suit you is not decided by the year you were born, and the exam is where that gets settled. If you’ve had a lot of dental work over the years, note it on your dental and medical history forms, which are reviewed at the first visit. For more complex bite corrections or severe crowding, braces may still be the recommendation.

What adult braces cost

Full orthodontic treatment with braces tends to range from $4,500 to $6,400 before any discount or insurance. That is a range and not a price because the fee depends mostly on the complexity of the case, and Dr. Hulse can’t judge that until he has examined your teeth. What you leave the consultation with is a cost estimate for your own treatment. The fuller picture, including insurance, is on our what treatment costs page.

If your plan doesn’t cover it

Does dental insurance pay for adult braces? Sometimes. It depends on your plan, so our team verifies your benefits at the consultation and helps you use them. We’re preferred providers for Delta Dental, Cigna Dental, MetLife, Guardian and UnitedHealthcare, among others, and that list is subject to change. If your plan pays nothing, or you don’t have one, you still have:

  • Flexible payment plans
  • In-office financing options

Payment plans, financing and insurance are all discussed at that first visit. One thing to know in advance: if your benefits change or end during treatment, you remain responsible for all charges. Our post on how insurance handles braces goes deeper on what to ask your plan.

If aligners were what you had in mind

Every patient here has an invisible option, and Invisalign is one of them: clear, removable aligners, no brackets or wires. Questions adults ask about braces

Is it worth getting braces as an adult?

Most adults find that the confidence that comes with a new smile far outweighs the early self-consciousness about wearing braces. Whether it is worth it for you depends on what your teeth need, which is what the free consultation, with digital photos and x-rays, helps determine. There is no cost to find out.

How much do teeth braces cost for adults?

Full treatment with braces tends to run $4,500 to $6,400 at our office before discounts or insurance. Where your case falls depends mostly on its complexity. A price for your own treatment comes only after the new patient exam, and the consultation that includes that exam is free, with a cost estimate.

Can adults get braces covered by insurance?

Some plans do and some don't, and coverage amounts vary. Our team verifies and reviews your benefits as part of the free first visit and helps you make the most of them. If your plan pays nothing, flexible payment plans and in-office financing options are available.

Which type of braces is best for adults?

The best type is the one that suits your teeth and how much you want showing; neither is best for everyone. Metal braces and clear ceramic braces (3M Clarity) are both fixed and both available to adults here. Ceramic brackets are translucent, a nearly invisible alternative to metal. Dr. Hulse will tell you which fits your case at the free consultation.

Is 40 too late for braces?

No. It is never too late for orthodontic treatment, and adults make up one in four orthodontic patients, a figure from the American Association of Orthodontists. Whether braces suit you at 40 is what a free consultation finds out.

This page is general information about braces for adults. It is not dental or medical advice; reading it does not make you a patient of Hulse Orthodontics. Results vary, and whether braces suit you takes an in-person exam. Any price on this page is a typical range rather than a quote. Advice about your own teeth should come from Dr. Cameron Hulse, DDS, or another qualified provider.
