What is Invisalign and how does it work?
Invisalign uses clear, removable trays that gradually shift teeth into place. Each aligner is custom-made from a 3D scan of your smile and worn for 20–22 hours a day before switching to the next set.
Because the trays are smooth and nearly invisible, patients can eat, brush, and floss normally. Step by step, Invisalign aligners apply gentle pressure that moves your teeth into their ideal positions. Learn more about Invisalign and see our overview in Invisalign 101.
How much does Invisalign cost in Carlsbad?
Most Invisalign treatments in our area range from $3,500–$7,500. Your fee depends on the complexity of your case and the length of treatment.
At your consultation, we’ll provide a personalized cost estimate and explain how much insurance may cover. We also offer flexible payment plans to make Invisalign more affordable. You can schedule a free consultation to review your options in person.
Does Invisalign hurt?
You may feel slight pressure for the first day or two with each new tray, but most patients describe it as very manageable.
Unlike braces, Invisalign doesn’t use brackets or wires that rub against cheeks or gums. If aligners ever cause irritation, we can adjust them quickly. Learn more on our Invisalign pain guide or how to handle aligner irritation.
What is the 22-hour rule?
Aligners need to be worn 20–22 hours a day to be effective. They should only be removed for eating, brushing, flossing, and drinking anything besides water. Consistency keeps treatment on track.
How long does Invisalign treatment take?
On average, treatment lasts 12–18 months, though minor cases may be completed in as little as 6 months.
Your exact timeline depends on your bite, how much movement is needed, and your consistency in wearing aligners. During your first visit, Dr. Hulse will create a digital ClinCheck plan showing how your teeth will move and the estimated timeline. Refinements (extra trays) are included in most treatment plans if adjustments are needed.
How often are orthodontic visits required?
Most Invisalign patients visit every 6–8 weeks—less often than with braces. At these appointments, we’ll check your progress, provide your next sets of aligners, and make any needed adjustments. For busy patients, our Virtual Smile Assessment can reduce the number of in-office visits.

Who is a good candidate?
Invisalign is a good option for most teens and adults with mild to moderate alignment issues. It can treat crowding, spacing, mild bite problems, and crooked teeth.
For more complex bite corrections or severe crowding, braces may still be recommended. Find out if you’re a candidate or why Invisalign may not be the best fit.
Can you eat and drink with Invisalign?
Yes, but trays must be removed before eating or drinking anything other than water.
When aligners are in, only water is safe. Hot drinks, soda, coffee, tea, or wine can stain or warp the trays. Once trays are out, you can eat anything—but sticky candy, gum, and very hard foods are best avoided since they can damage teeth or attachments. Always brush or rinse before reinserting your aligners. For more tips, see our Invisalign care guide.
Do I need retainers after Invisalign?
Yes. Retainers keep your teeth from shifting back once treatment is complete.
Most patients wear them full-time for the first few months, then at night long-term. Learn more about retainers after treatment or visit our retainers page.
What if I’m not happy with the results?
Refinements, extra sets of aligners are included in most Invisalign treatment plans. These additional trays fine-tune your results so you finish with the smile you expect. Learn more about our Invisalign warranty & limits.
Can I see my ClinCheck before starting?
Yes. ClinCheck provides a digital simulation of your future smile. You’ll be able to see how your teeth move at every stage and review the plan with Dr. Hulse before aligners are ordered.
Does insurance cover Invisalign?
Many orthodontic insurance plans cover Invisalign just like braces. Coverage amounts vary, but our team will verify your benefits and help maximize them. We also offer in-office financing options to spread out the cost.
Invisalign vs. braces: which is right for me?
Invisalign is nearly invisible and removable, while braces are often better for complex corrections.
Both treatments can achieve excellent results. The right choice depends on your bite and your lifestyle. Compare the options on our clear aligners vs. braces page.

Tatiana Mikhailenko

Hulse Orthodontics is great. Our dentist has a partner in his office and they quoted us a price thousands of dollars higher than the quote we got from Hulse. Plus the orthodontist at our dentist wanted some of her teeth pulled. Hulse Orthodontists straightened her teeth without pulling any teeth and did it for thousands less. Plus my daughter looks amazing. The staff and doctors are so friendly and professional. You can’t go wrong if you go to Hulse Orthodontics.
